Mission Statement: The Queen City Mile and Checkers Athletic Club believe that running promotes physical health, mental well-being, and personal growth. Our mission is to inspire youth to discover the sport of running, while removing barriers that limit participation and strengthening the running community as a whole. Through outreach programs, financial assistance scholarships, and support of local running events and initiatives, we are committed to creating opportunities for every athlete to run, belong, and thrive.
Checkers Financial Aid Scholarship Assistance Program
The Checkers Financial Aid Scholarship Assistance Program is dedicated to advancing equitable access to youth athletics by eliminating financial barriers to participation in running. Grounded in the belief that running promotes physical health, mental well-being, and personal growth, the program provides need-based financial assistance to athletes who would otherwise be unable to participate. We strive to ensure that every child has the opportunity to run, grow, and thrive by supporting families and enabling full participation on the Snyder Track and Field teams.

Tom Donnelly was a central figure in Buffalo’s running community for decades. He served as president of the Checkers Athletic Club and the Western New York Running Hall of Fame. He was also the race director for both the Buffalo Marathon and the Turkey Trot. An accomplished runner, he completed many marathons, including a personal best of 2:35. Though he passed away in 2014, his leadership and contributions to the sport continue to inspire this award.
Each year, the Checkers Athletic Club awards two $500 scholarships to Section VI track & field or cross country athletes who demonstrate excellence in community service, academic achievement, and commitment to personal fitness. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors with a minimum 80% (B) average and a record of volunteer service.
